It’s been a couple of weeks of bad news for BYU football but we can find a little bit of good news on the recruiting trail. 2016 SS/OLB prospect Hirkley Latu announced his commitment to the Cougars yesterday. Latu comes from Kahuku High School in Hawaii and this is a great get for BYU for a couple of different reasons.
It’s always nice for BYU to pulls kids from Hawaii. For years, the Islands have been a staple on the football team and it’s always important to keep that pipeline strong. Beyond that, Latu is a talented player that will bring a lot of versatility to Provo. At 6’3″ and 195 lbs. Latu has the size and athleticism to play a number of different positions. He currently plays safety and outside linebacker in Hawaii but he played corner at the All-Poly Camp earlier this summer. Latu is a really talented player.

Latu only had offers from BYU and Utah but I would imagine that he picks up a few more before he’s able to sign an official Letter of Intent in 2016. It’s going to be really important for BYU to hold on to Latu over the next year and a half or so. I don”t think that he’s done raking in offers and I also don’t think he’s done growing as a football player. By the time that he graduates high school, he could be the next big linebacker prospect to come out of Hawaii. The more Hawaiian linebackers on BYU’s team, the better.
Go follow the newest Cougar commit on Twitter @hirklatu and help welcome him to BYU. This is a big get, everyone. I’m excited for him to come to Provo.
