21. Texas just can’t beat BYU (2013)

Another game that benefits from context.

From September 6th, 2012 to December 2nd 2014, some scheduling coincidence brought the Cougars and the Texas Longhorns together in a number of sports.

And the Cougars beat them. Every time.

Women’s soccer blasted them 5-0 at home. Taysom Hill and Jamaal Williams ran all over (and around, and under, and through) the Longhorns, twice. Women’s volleyball stunned the 2nd ranked Texas team to advance to the national title match.

The BYU basketball team could hardly do less.

Two and a half months after the football team set a school rushing record against the Longhorns, the Cougar Cagers squared off against U of T in the College Basketball Experience Hall of Fame Classic. This game was no one-sided drubbing, but in fact a great battle between two talented teams.

But fate was against the Longhorns, and the Cougars secured yet another W.

It didn’t hurt that the win ended up paying dividends for the Cougars at the end of the year. That Texas team ended up being a tournament team, and helped the Cougars secure an at-large NCAA berth.

Now, you may say, what’s with the recency bias on this list? And I reply to you, for the most part, they only have recent games available online.

Honorable mention: BYU vs San Diego 2016. Because beating a conference team by the largest margin of victory in school history appeals to the sadist in us all.
