11. Cougars take one from the Pit (1998)

Some of the best games happen when all the odds are against you.

In the 1997-1998 season, BYU basketball was not a great team. Only one year removed from the worst year in team history (1-24), the Cougars were improving but still not there yet. Going 9-21 isn’t going to move anyone’s meter.

But it was progress—progress that new head coach Steve Cleveland was desperately looking for.

Late in the season, against the No. 16 New Mexico team, the Cougars founds some magic. With the help of a freshman Mekeli Wesley and some hot shooting all around, yet another senior night was ruined.

Going down to the Pit, where even great teams shrivel, BYU shocked the Lobo’s with a 21 point victory. And they did it in slick, black uniforms with royal accents and white trim.

Those things were legit.
