At BYU football Media Day, the Cougars announced the retirement of No. 6 to honor some legendary players. Here are some other numbers they should consider.

Two weeks ago, BYU football announced the retirement plans of No. 6 at halftime of the Wisconsin game. The jersey will be retired to honor quarterbacks Marc Wilson and Robbie Bosco, along with running back Luke Staley.

All three are undeniably deserving of the honor.

Wilson broke nine NCAA records during his BYU football career (1975-79). He first saw some game action in 1977, and from 1977-79, the Cougars went 29-7 and captured three Western Athletic Conference titles.

Bosco was in Provo from 1981-85, backing up Jim McMahon and Steve Young. He took over as the starter in 1984, leading BYU to the National Championship. He threw for 33 touchdowns and 3,875 yards that season, en route to All-American honors. His playing career ended with 66 touchdowns and 8,400 passing yards.

Staley may have been the single most dynamic player in Cougar history. For his career, he ran for 2,507 yards and 41 touchdowns while adding 1,000 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. During his final season with BYU football, Staley averaged 8.1 yards per carry. Since that season, just 17 players have average more YPC than he did.

Still, there are other former BYU football stars who are deserving of the honor. Here’s a list of some that should be considered.
