1990: No. 16 BYU 28 – No. 1 Miami 21

Really no surprises with this entry. This is the greatest BYU football win of all time.

With fans in Cougar Stadium rocking their Heisman Tys, Detmer led the Cougars to a win over the defending National Champion Hurricanes.

It is still the only time BYU football has defeated the nation’s No. 1 team, and this game put Detmer in the driver’s seat for the Heisman Trophy (which he won that season).

The biggest play of the game can be viewed in the video above, but most Cougar fans can probably remember it like the back of their hand. In the third quarter, with BYU threatening to score, Detmer took the snap. He dropped back, evaded two Miami defenders and set his feet to throw to the end zone. With three defenders crashing down on him, he fired a strike to Mike Salido – who was originally a blocker on the play.

Detmer completed 38-of-54 passes for 406 yards and three touchdowns. Matt Bellini, Andy Boyce and Chris Smith combined for 26 receptions, 297 yards and two touchdowns.
