BYU football: Three reasons this is the perfect time for a bye
Back to the drawing board
At this point, we know Ty Detmer’s offense works when two of the best players in school history are on the roster. Beyond that, we’re still trying to figure it out.
Unfortunately, it looks like he is, too.
The emergence of Ula Tolutau looks good for the run game, and don’t forget this offense line is still good. Keyan Norman was on PFF’s College Team of the Week last week, grading out with a 89.3 rating. It’s easy to forget the talent that LSU, Utah and Wisconsin have up front.
The trouble still appears to be the passing game. While having Beau Hoge in doesn’t necessarily help things, it’s still too early to judge him. Ultimately, I think he’ll be fine against Utah State. Will we (finally) see more Micah Simon? I’d like to hope so, considering he’s made the most of his limited targets.
For what it’s worth, I want to see Akile Davis get some run, too. But I’m not holding my breath.
What it boils down to is this: Detmer has an extra week to figure out who is best 11 players are and what his best schemes are. Figure out what you’re good at, then go do it. There’s talent on this offense, so I refuse to believe they aren’t good at anything. It’s on him to figure it out.
If that means a little more from shotgun, so be it. But his job is to get the offense rolling. It’s fair to say he needs more time to get his recruits in, but it’s also fair to demand he make necessary adjustments.
