Brandon Davies joining Team Fredette for The Basketball Tournament
By Shaun Gordon
With the news that Brandon Davies will play for Team Fredette in The Basketball Tournament, three former BYU Basketball standouts are reuniting.
This year’s The Basketball Tournament is becoming a reunion of players from BYU Basketball’s most recent Sweet Sixteen year.
Brandon Davies has officially joined Team Fredette for the tournament later this month, joining Jimmer Fredette and Charles Abouo in an attempt to win the $2 million grand prize.
Late last week, Davies tweeted out that he’d play for Team Fredette if he got 1,000 new Twitter followers within a week.
It didn’t even take a week, as Team Fredette’s Twitter feed made it official:
Davies is coming off a monster year overseas in Lithuania. The former Cougar star led Zagaris to the LKL championship, earning Finals MVP honors for his performance.
He’s no stranger to The Basketball Tournament either. He played for Team Fredette last year, along with Abouo, as they fell in the first round to Team Utah 100-97 on a buzzer-beating three pointer.
There’s one big difference this year: Jimmer Fredette.
Last year, Jimmer coached but didn’t play. This year he’ll lace it up alongside his former teammates, looking to make enough of a splash to get another shot in the NBA.
Along with Fredette, Davies, and Abouo, the team also features:
- Derek Cooke Jr. (Wyoming)
- Jordon Crawford (Bowling Green)
- EJ Gallup (Coastal Carolina)
- Darington Hobson (New Mexico)
- Dejan Kravic (Texas Tech)
- Jeff Ledbetter (Idaho)
- Xavier Silas (Northern Illinois)
- Jamaal Tatum (Southern Illinois)
With the news the Jimmer would play, TBT awarded Team Fredette a No. 2 seed in the Midwest Bracket. They’ll play in Columbus, Ohio, with their first game tipping off on July 21st. Fans can catch that game at 12:00pm ET on ESPN.
Team Fredette is one of the few teams that will have all of their games televised on either ESPN or ESPN2.
