Special Teams

Last season’s placekicking was abysmal for Hawaii. Ryan Meskell (So.) and Alex Trifonovitch (Jr.) combined to hit only four out of nine field goals, Trifonovitch was a little bit better, so he’ll have a slight edge in a kicking battle that will likely run through fall camp.

Punting was much more steady. Stan Gaudion (So.) averaged 42.1 yards per punt and pinned 19 kicks within the 20-yard line. He’ll be back and look to be even better in 2018.

Collie was the primary punt returner last year, so they’ll continue auditioning replacements in fall camp.

Outlook

It’s hard to see how Hawaii can snap their seven-season losing streak in 2018. They do benefit from a very easy schedule, but There are too many newcomers and too much uncertainty to expect them to be any better than last year, especially with Brown and Collie gone.

If the Rainbow Warriors can win more games than last year, it should be considered a successful step. With the schedule as it is, that’s a decent possibility.
