Additions and Omissions

Roster Additions

Four key names are on the roster for the first time.

The first two are a pair of wide receivers. Dylan Collie is officially a Cougar once again, after transferring to Hawaii. The senior is back as a graduate transfer, and he’ll add a reliable veteran presence to the passing game.

And then there’s Gunner Romney. Unlike the veteran Collie, he’s a 4-Star freshman who will look to come in and contribute immediately. His high school stats were eye-popping, and he has the physical skills to compete right away.

The other two freshman newcomers to note will be kicking the ball. Skyler Southam is a 4-Star kicker who’s back from his mission. He’ll compete in fall camp to oust incumbent seniors Rhett Almond and Andrew Mikkelsen.

On the punting side, Australian Danny Jones is ready to compete for that job. If the former rugby star can prove he’s adjusted to football, he could earn the job over Almond and Southam.

Roster Omissions

There are three notable omissions. Two don’t come as a big surprise, but the other is unexpected.

Running back Ula Tolutau and tight end Joe Tukuafu are still absent from the roster. They weren’t on the media day roster, either, although offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes wouldn’t rule out their return at some point.

The surprise is Trey Dye. The wide receiver/running back is no longer playing due to injury:

It’s good to see that he’ll still participate with the team even though he’s not able to play.

One Final Note

While it’s not technically a roster change, two former walk-ons received scholarships for the upcoming season. Senior fullback Brayden El-Bakri and sophomore quarterback Joe Critchlow will both be scholarship athletes in 2018.
