BYU Football: Scouting the Schedule – Boise State
By Shaun Gordon
Special Teams
Boise State used two punters effectively last season, and both are back. Quinn Skillin (Sr.) and Joel Velazquez (So.) both averaged just over 40 yards per punt, and they’ll push each other all season.
Haden Hoggarth (Sr.) was solid at placekicker in 2017, hitting 18 of his 23 field goal attempts. He doesn’t have a huge leg, though, which has kept him from blossoming into a true weapon.
Avery Williams ran two punts back for touchdowns this year, and the cornerback will resume those duties this season.
Outlook
All of the pieces are in place for a special season at Boise State. They have a veteran quarterback, and experienced team, and weapons on both sides of the ball.
Plus, they’ll benefit from a pretty easy schedule. The Broncos normally schedule at least one marquee non-conference matchup each year, and this year it’s Oklahoma State in the third week of the season. They get to host the two toughest MWC teams, Fresno State and San Diego State.
If BYU is any better than they were in 2017, the Cougars will be one of the toughest games that the Broncos will play.
