BYU Football: Scouting the Schedule – New Mexico State
By Shaun Gordon
Special Teams
New Mexico State’s special teams unit will be one of their biggest strengths. Dylan Brown (Jr.) hit 13 of his 17 field goals in 2017, and he’ll look to do even better in 2018.
Payton Theisler (Jr.) averaged just over 41 yards per punt last season, and he’ll also look to improve on that this season.
Jason Huntley established himself as an elite returner last year, taking two kickoffs to the house. He’s back at it again in 2018.
Outlook
With so many questions surrounding the future of New Mexico State football, a second-straight bowl game would really go a long way in helping secure their FBS hopes.
They’ve got the schedule to go bowling again in 2018, with winnable games against New Mexico, UTEP, Liberty (twice), Georgia Southern, Texas State, and Alcorn State.
They’re going to have to turn things around quickly, though, following their beatdown by Wyoming this past weekend. The offense was abysmal, and continued performance like that will ruin any bowl game hopes the Aggies have.
