BYU Football: Quarterback Stacy Conner to transfer
By Adam Gibby
After two seasons of being on the BYU Football team and being buried on the QB depth chart, Stacy Conner has decided to enter the transfer portal.
BYU Football is oversaturated in one position, the quarterback. Head Coach Kalani Sitake and Jeff Grimes have both said that the more quarterbacks that they have on their roster the better. Part of that may be an after affect of two seasons ago when Tanner Mangum, Beau Hoge and Koy Detmer Jr all needed replacements and freshman Joe Critchlow and Austin Kafentzis were asked to run the offense which required the coaches to go down as far as the fifth stringer.
Currently, BYU Football has nine quarterbacks, but up to this point, it appears that only three quarterbacks are getting any snaps during practices not including starter Zach Wilson who is out with a shoulder injury.
Quarterbacks Hayden Griffitts, Isaiah Ramos, Rhett Reilly, Gunnar Legas and Stacy Conner have not received very many live reps during Spring Practice and it would appear that at best Conner was the fifth string quarterback, which would make sense as to why he decided to transfer to become a starter or backup somewhere else.
Many fans were hoping that perhaps Conner would be moved to a different position such as wide receiver or tight end. Conner stands at 6’6″ and in high school showed that he was able to run well enough to perhaps play a different position although he primarily did avoid running when possible.
Out of high school Conner was a three star dual quarterback commit to UNLV before BYU flipped him to come to Provo. Much of credit for his flip was given to BYU receiver Micah Simon who was good friends and from the same area in Texas as Conner growing up.
Stacy Conner will enter the transfer portal but to this point has not announced where he plans or wants to play. UNLV may be a possibility after a 4-8 season. Max Gilliam a senior likely will have the starting role this season, but Conner could work to be the backup and eventual starter.
