Jaxson Rex, a three-star athlete and member of a BYU football legacy family, has officially sliced his list of finalists down to just two programs: the Cougars and the Bruins of UCLA, near his hometown of San Clemente, California.

Jaxson's uncle, Byron Rex, was an All-American tight end during his time with BYU football, and his cousin Isaac was the starting tight end with the Cougars in 2020 and 2021. Another cousin of the same family, Preson Rex, is a current running back at BYU.
A three-star recruit standing at 6'1", Jaxson doesn't play tight end like his relatives, but was still heavily recruited by names like Arizona, Boise State, New Mexico, and more. Now down to finalists from the Big 12 and Big Ten conferences, Rex's decision will wait until after he takes official visits to both programs. He's already booked a trip to Provo for June 18th of this year.
According to 247 Sports, Rex is the 90th-rated athlete in the class of 2027 and has a stronger pull to BYU than the other programs on his list.
Jaxson spoke with Sports Illustrated when first setting an official visit with BYU back in February.
"I was super excited honestly, it’s the offer I’ve been waiting and grinding for. My family basically bleeds blue, and I’ve grown up in Provo watching my cousins play and going to camps. So getting that call was huge for me."
As the "athlete" designation would suggest, Jaxson made his case for D1 consideration on both sides of the field, playing wide receiver and safety in high school.
"I’ve talked a lot with Coach A-Rod and Coach Poppinga about it. I feel like I can play either WR or DB at the P4 level," Jaxson explained on his decision to play on the offensive or defensive side. "I just love football — offense, defense, all of it. I’m glad I don’t have to choose right now. I’m gonna enjoy playing both sides my senior year, and after my mission I’ll figure out the fastest way to get on the field and help the team."
Jaxson is a mission-first player, so wherever he commits, he won't officially suit up for his team until the 2029 season.
