The Robert Wright III transfer portal saga is the gift that keeps on giving as 247's top transfer portal point guard is building buzz for a return to BYU, even while on his official visit with Mark Pope and Kentucky.
Panic spiked in Lexington when Travis Branham, an analyst with 247 Sports, took to CBS to report that his confidence in Mark Pope and Kentucky's chances was going the wrong direction and swinging back in the direction of a return to Kevin Young's BYU basketball program.
"There's been a lot of smoke and talk regarding the Kentucky Wildcats and Rob Wright," Branham reported Tuesday afternoon. "He's currently on campus for a visit. Go back 24-48 hours ago, the information that I was receiving was positive for Kentucky."
"But throughout the past 24 hours leading into today, my confidence at him landing at Kentucky is actually decreasing right now. [...] I think there's a very real chance he could end up back at BYU."
In case you were wondering why Kentucky fans had become negative this evening…

That statement could have set the city of Lexington aflame, per the reaction from Kentucky fans. Where Wright was once very heavily favored to find his way to UK, BYU found a way to replay the events of Richie Saunders' portal experience when Pope attempted to bring the hustling guard to join the Wildcats along with his former coach.
Saunders obviously declined Pope's offer and opted to finish his career in Provo. Perhaps we could be witnessing history repeat itself as Rob Wright weighs his options.
Should Wright lean toward a return, he would fill a vital need in Kevin Young's rotation that currently stands without a starting-caliber point guard to pair alongside Collin Chandler and five-star freshman Bruce Branch III. Depth, shooting, and rebounding are the key focuses of head coach Kevin Young's dig through the transfer portal because those were the deficiencies that kept the AJ Dybantsa-led Cougars from making a deep run in March Madness.
He can't afford to make the same mistake with another potential lottery pick on campus. Rob Wright would instantly help with the Cougars' shooting woes, as he was a >40% three-point shooter as a sophomore.
There's something almost poetic about Mark Pope and his former program, BYU, battling over the same recruit. An arm wrestle, swinging either way, we just pray neither side leaves this struggle with a broken arm.
