The BYU Cougars kick off the 2025 season in 44 days against Portland State. As we continue counting down the days until kickoff, today we will profile the player who wears No. 44 - redshirt senior kicker Will Ferrin - by providing three interesting, fun facts:
Fun fact No. 1 - He attained legend status with his game-winner over Utah
The heated emotions and general disdain felt between BYU and Utah fans festers 365 days a year to the point where it's hard for some of us to watch when the two teams face off on the gridiron. There are certain moments in the BYU-Utah rivalry that are etched into the minds of Cougars fans, and they stay there for years.
Will Ferrin owns one of those classic moments.
Ferrin's father just might be Frozone from the Incredibles, because the dude was born with ice in his veins. His 44-yard field goal with 0:03 remaining to lift BYU to a 22-21 victory over Utah at Rice Eccles Stadium is arguably the most clutch field goal in BYU history.
Fun fact No. 2 - He's a 2025 preseason All-American
While Will Ferrin will always be remembered for that one glorious moment, his career is much more than just one kick. The player from Kaysville, Utah made 24 of 27 (88.9%) field goal attempts last year, including a 54-yarder, en route to being named Big 12 Co-Special Teams Player of the Year.
After last year's incredible performance, coupled with a solid 2023 campaign in which he went 11 of 14 in field goal attempts, Ferrin enters 2025 as a Phil Steele Preseason All-American.
Fun Fact No. 3 - He's a returned missionary
While Ferrin's impact on the field is well documented, he has also made an impact off the field through his missionary service for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. According to his player profile at BYU's website, he served a mission in Vancouver, Canada.
