The BYU Cougars will kick off the 2026 season in 64 days against Utah Tech. As we count down the days until kickoff, today we will profile the player who wears No. 64 - redshirt senior guard Kyle Sfarcioc.

Kyle Sfarcioc's background

Kyle Sfarcioc is a great example of a good-but-not-great high school player betting on himself then grinding his way to the top of the Power Four.

He played his high school ball in Arizona and was a two-star prospect in the class of 2021 with a 79 grade from 247 Sports. Players with Sfarcioc's profile rarely pull in offers from big-time programs, and that was the case with Kyle. He ended up signing with Southern Utah University and ended up excelling in Cedar City. He appeared in 24 games for the Thunderbirds and his time there culminated with a 2024 campaign in which he started nine games. In all he played 1,409 snaps and surrendered zero sacks.

His play for SUU caught the eye of bigger programs, so he wisely hit the transfer portal in 2025. His profile had risen to the point where 247 Sports graded him as a solid three-star transfer product with an 86 rating. He ultimately chose BYU as the destination where he would play out his final two seasons of college football.

Sfarcioc's past and present with BYU

When he committed to BYU in the transfer portal a year ago, many BYU fans looked at the addition of the 6-foot-4, 310-pounder as a bit of a curiosity. Sure, he was experienced with a couple of years of college ball under his belt, but it was at Southern Utah. Would he be able to make the jump to Power Four football and actually see the field, or would he just be a depth piece come Big 12 play? He wasn't a four-star transfer prospect coming from a Power Four school, so how good could he really be?

Sfarcioc quickly answered those questions.

In his first season in Provo last year he appeared in all 14 games of BYU's 12-2 season, starting five. He flashed his versatility by playing both guard spots when called upon. He was an integral part of the Cougars offensive line that opened holes for running back LJ Martin to claim the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year award while also keeping freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier upright and protected. Needless to say, Sfarcioc handled the adjustment from SUU to BYU quite well.

Kyle also performed well in the classroom in his first academic year at BYU and earned Fall Academic All-Big 12 recognition.

He goes into the 2026 season as the team's starting right guard. Barring injury or something completely unforeseen, he's going to play a massive part in BYU's success this season.
