67 days until BYU football: Trevor Pay (No. 67) continues the family legacy of solid, smart offensive line play

Now entering this redshirt sophomore season, Trevor Pay looks to solidify his spot as No. 2 center after appearing in four games last year for the 12-2 Cougars. And pray for him as he wears the number "six-seven!"

The BYU Cougars will kick off the 2026 season in 67 days against Utah Tech. As we count down the days until kickoff, today we will profile the player who wears No. 67 - redshirt sophomore center Trevor Pay. (This is where I'm obligated to make a "six-seven" reference.)

Trevor Pay's background

The last name Pay is synonymous with BYU's offensive line. His father, Garry, played offensive line for BYU a generation ago. His older brother, Connor, was a standout center for the Cougars and is now on staff helping coach the offensive line. Trevor's younger brother, four-star prospect Austin, signed with the Cougars in the class of 2025 and is currently serving a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Trevor, like his brothers, also served a mission. He was assigned to the Alabama Birmingham mission prior to starting his football career at BYU.

BYU should always have a Pay on the roster, but not only for legacy or nostalgia. Two traits shared by Pays are solid play and smart football. Trevor is no exception. He was a 4.0 student in high school.

While he wasn't a national recruit in the class of 2022 as a low-end three star with an 81 rating, he was still a Top 50 recruit in the state of Utah that year. He prepped at American Fork High School, so right in BYU's back yard. The only other offer Trevor has on record came from Morehead State.

Pay's past and present with BYU

Trevor was still knocking off the mission rust and adjusting to post-mission life in 2024. As a freshman that season he didn't appear in any games but did his part on the scout team. He was awarded Offensive Scout Team Player of the Week leading up to the Southern Illinois game. Since he didn't appear in any games in 2024, he was able to redshirt.

Last year as a redshirt freshman he appeared in four games for the 12-2, nationally ranked Cougars. He saw action against Portland State, East Carolina, TCU, and UCF, games that BYU won in convincing fashion. He's looking to build on that success this year.

He was also named to the Fall Academic All-Big 12 Team. As previously mentioned, the Pays are smart.

While Bruce Mitchell will reprise his role as the starting center this year, Trevor Pay has an inside track at locking down the No. 2 center position on BYU's two-deep roster. Sonny Makasini could also fill that role, but Makasini is also battling for a starting guard spot this year. Either way, Trevor Pay is too solid and too smart to not see the field in 2026, continuing BYU's long (and growing) legacy of Pays making an impact in Provo.
