7 days until kickoff: Three fun facts about Logan Lutui (No. 7) and his quest to go from contributing to dominating

As an overall impressive human being in general, Logan Lutui has the opportunity in his redshirt senior year to go from consistently contributing to consistently impacting games by getting to the quarterback.

The BYU Cougars kick off the 2025 season in 7 days against Portland State. As we continue counting down the days until kickoff, today we will profile the player who wears No. 7 - redshirt senior defensive end Logan Lutui - by providing three interesting, fun facts. (Note: Lutui wore No. 59 in the past as pictured here, but changed to No. 7 this year.)

Fun fact No. 1 - He went to my high school!

Not to make this all about me...but I was raised in West Valley City, Utah and attended Hunter High, as did Logan Lutui. Now, I went to Hunter a long, long time ago but I still get excited when I see former Wolverines succeed, especially at BYU. Here's to hoping Logan can continue to rep some west side pride as he closes out his college career in Provo.

Fun fact No. 2 - He's an impressive human being

Logan Lutui's player profile at BYU's team website is super impressive. While I've never met Logan, he seems to be exactly the type of guy we want representing what BYU stands for. He was a co-captain last year and in 2023 was named Academic All-Big 12 First Team with a pre-med major. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New Zealand, is a married father, and began playing the organ at church at age 15. Just, wow.

Fun fact No. 3 - He needs to have a huge 2025 season for BYU to succeed

The biggest deficiency in BYU's defense over the last several years has been their inability to consistently generate pressure on the quarterback. At 6-foot-2 and 260 pounds, Lutui needs to have a monster senior season to help the Cougars succeed.

In 26 career games at BYU with six starts he has recorded 26 tackles, four tackles for loss, and one sack. Whether he starts in 2025 or comes in as a reserve, he should be on the field a lot for Jay Hill's defense. Lutui has been an excellent rotational contributor in his years as a Cougar, and 2025 needs to be the year he becomes an impact player.

Given his impressive background and his Hunter High roots, I'm confident he can do just that.
