The Wizards' plans for the number-one overall pick may have just been leaked if the word of Grant Afseth, a Dallas-based reporter, has accurate information on the draft board and intel from the Washington Wizards organization to draft BYU's AJ Dybantsa that somehow hasn't been shared with more local journalists.
"The Washington Wizards currently plan to draft former BYU forward AJ Dybantsa with the No. 1 overall pick, sources told Dallas Hoops Journal, with the franchise centered on him as the 2026 NBA Draft opens Tuesday."

While the content of the report is believable -- AJ Dybantsa has been the projected number-one pick by many, many sources since before he began his freshman season at BYU -- the source itself feels questionable.
Afseth also went viral for a report that Darryn Peterson, the Kansas star and AJ's direct competition for the number-one overall pick, did not want to play for the Utah Jazz. That was his explanation for Peterson's decision to cancel his visit to Utah, and he then reported that Peterson preferred to be drafted by Washington or Memphis.
No other sources supported this report, with Ben Anderson of KSL reporting the exact opposite: the Utah Jazz remained in contact with Peterson and his representation despite his decision to only privately work out with Washington.
So again, take this report for what it's worth. While it may be true that Washington has zeroed in on Dybantsa as the pick, it's unlikely that a reporter in Texas knows the intentions of the Washington Wizards better than any other news source in the nation. His previous report was unfounded, so it's likely that this is all hollow reporting, or predictive journalism.
After leading the nation in points per game as a freshman at BYU, AJ Dybantsa put his unique blend of skill, IQ, athleticism, and size on full display. He projects to be an all-star, potential all-NBA, or even MVP-candidate-level player at the highest level, and will contribute immediately, as both the Wizards and Jazz are preparing to compete in their respective ends of the NBA Playoff bracket in 2027.
