Bad Breaks: BYU players in the NFL are dealing with a distressing number of injuries right now

Taysom Hill, Kyle Van Noy, Tyler Batty, and a handful of other players have two things in common: They played for BYU, and they are currently injured in the NFL.

NFL rosters are dotted with former BYU players.

Unfortunately, so are NFL injured reserves.

Former BYU Cougars in the NFL are dealing with a distressing number of injuries right now. There are currently 17 former Cougars in the National Football League and six of them are currently wearing street clothes. I wish all of them a speedy recovery so BYU fans can cheer them on every Sunday.

Taysom Hill, QB, New Orleans Saints

The do-it-all football player tore his ACL in December of last year and is still working his way back into playing shape. He began the 2025 season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, meaning he needs to miss at least the first four games of the season. But it looks like it's going to take far longer than that before Taysom takes the field. In August Saints head coach Kellen Moore said Hill won't be on the field "any time soon."

Kyle Van Noy, OLB, Baltimore Ravens

Last year was the 12th-year pro's best season of his career with 12.5 sacks and his first Pro Bowl nod. Van Noy's 2025 follow-up campaign got derailed in the second game of this season when he suffered a hamstring injury. He's currently considered "week-to-week" and will likely miss several games.

Zayne Anderson, S, Green Bay Packers

The fifth-year pro had the best season of his career last year when he appeared in 16 games with the Packers and recorded 16 tackles, one interception, and two passes defended. His 2025 campaign has been delayed after suffering a knee injury in the preseason. He has been a limited participant in practice, but hasn't progressed enough to play.

Blake Freeland, OT, Indianapolis Colts

In an absolute awful situation, Blake Freeland fractured his leg in the preseason and will miss the entire year. This was going to be an important bounce-back season for the third-year pro who is still trying to find his role with the Colts, but he's now not going to have that chance.

Tyler Batty, DE, Minnesota Vikings

The good news is the undrafted rookie made the Vikings roster. The bad news is he injured his knee in the preseason and has yet to play. He's on Minnesota's injured reserve though he's been listed as "designate to return" meaning he needs to miss at least the first four games of the season before making his NFL debut.

Jakob Robinson, CB, San Francisco 49ers

This one really hurts. Despite being an undrafted rookie, Robinson was receiving a lot of positive coverage from his performance at the 49ers summer camp. He was trending toward making the 53-man roster but then he broke his forearm in the preseason and will miss the entire year. He's still on the 49ers roster -- they didn't waive him after the injury -- meaning he's on track to continue his career with the team after he heals up.
