Is the search for a starting center nearing its close?

It seems like we're finally nearing the decision point of Jaxon Kohler's spontaneous recruiting cycle, and all signs seem to be pointing in the direction of Provo, Utah, the home of Kevin Young's blossoming basketball program.

Though it's primarily speculation and rumor circulation, Kohler has been reported to be making his commitment as early as today, with BYU and Kentucky as the final contenders to secure his services.

But the rumors simply don't stop. Like a particle accelerator, social media will not quit until every rumor has infected every feed and every fan is left equal parts optimistic and bewildered. The biggest piece of gossip is a report from Kansas insider Mike Vernon, who reported that Kohler informed Kansas' staff that he'd be committing to BYU.

While this seems like good news for now, there's little evidence to back up Vernon's claims besides his own word. He appears to be very plugged in with the Kansas program behind-the-scenes, but I'd take this report as little more than a rumor until more sources can back it up.

Sparty transfer Jaxon Kohler will soon announce his commitment

Vernon's Kansas report came shortly after Kentucky reporter Jack Pilgrim reported that BYU and Kentucky were the final candidates in Kohler's recruiting process and announced that a commitment would arrive on Thursday, as early as Thursday afternoon.

I'm drafting this article with one eye and locking the other to my news feed, just in case an announcement is made.

Kohler, who was recently granted a fifth year of eligibility, spent this last summer with the Utah Jazz Summer League team, grew up in American Fork, Utah, and is a member of BYU's sponsor religion, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Those factors alone make BYU an attractive candidate, but the opening at the center position ironically puts Kevin Young's program in the strongest position to succeed.

After a disastrous offseason that saw the Cougars come away with just one center, a 6'9" center from Poland, Jakub Urbaniak, Young's hopes for a successful season on the court depended heavily on the Cougars' ability to balance the starting lineup with a high-tier, Big 12-quality starter at the 5.

Kohler has really fallen into BYU's lap. Call it fortune, destiny, or flat-out luck, but if BYU is, in fact, the favorite to secure Kohler's commitment, this problem couldn't have solved itself any better.

We'll keep an ear on the ground, and suggest you do the same. Jaxon Kohler's commitment is imminent, and BYU should like their chances.
