Between back-to-back double-digit win seasons in football and elite basketball recruiting under Kevin Young, BYU has built significant momentum across its major programs. Kalani Sitake has retained the majority of key players, even following the departure of defensive coordinator Jay Hill.

Young has secured two top-10 recruits in as many years, including AJ Dybantsa and Bruce Branch III. That kind of success is thrilling as a fan, but it leaves me worried about how much of it is tied to the coaches.

The last two years of football and basketball have been some of the most exciting I’ve experienced as a fan of BYU. But it feels fragile.

It’s upsetting to think where the football program would be if Sitake had left for Penn State, or what would happen if Young takes an NBA job. If BYU wants to become and stay a power, it needs a lasting program identity that consistently brings in top recruits and builds teams that compete for conference titles.

The school’s greatest recruiting asset outside of its coaches is strong NIL support. The Honor Code, seen by many as a big limitation, can actually appeal to athletes wanting to stay focused while in school and get to the pros. The Cougars have produced some top NFL talent, and AJ Dybantsa is widely viewed as a potential number one pick in a future NBA Draft.

BYU is in a strong position to establish a winning identity. In a power conference, landing big recruits, and winning will change how people view the program. With a clear identity and continued use of NIL, BYU can grow into a consistent power.

This is the moment for BYU to take advantage of the current coaches and elite recruits, because if it doesn’t, the opportunity could be lost.
