5-star freshman Bruce Branch III's number at BYU honors the Cougars' NBA legacy

That's right. BYU basketball has an NBA legacy now.

With Bruce Branch III's official announcement that he had signed with Kevin Young's BYU basketball program, the picture of him donning a royal blue uniform was both awe-inspiring and speculation-sparking.

Yes, for the third straight season, BYU hoops would welcome a 5-star freshman into the program with the intention of developing his skills and putting them on display to launch these young stars toward a career in the NBA. For the second straight season, that player was a McDonald's All-American. All three of these players have worn the same number on their jersey during their time in Provo.

3.

It's the number Egor Demin donned in Kevin Young's first season. Demin (pronounced DYOH-min, for you casuals and/or non-Russian speakers in the audience) was a one-and-done at BYU, their first in the modern era, and was selected eighth overall by the Brooklyn Nets in the NBA Draft.

The very same number was stamped on the uniform of AJ Dybantsa, the number-one player in his recruiting class and the projected number-one pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. Though he continues to dangle the possibility of a return to Provo, he's not the first potential top selection to pull a similar stunt -- he's NBA-bound.

Now we see the same digit proclaiming the arrival of Bruce Branch III, the sixth-ranked player in his recruiting class (after reclassifying up from a class where he was number-one, much like Dybantsa), the number 3 has special meaning for BYU basketball.

It's like the number 10 for international soccer -- when a royal blue jersey displays a 3, it's a very clear indicator of what the opposition will be forced to deal with. 3 represents a line of NBA talent passing through the BYU basketball program; it's the symbol of head coach fulfilling his promise to make BYU the premier destination in college basketball to prepare for a career in the NBA.

That promise has brought all three of BYU's 5-star freshman through the doors of the Marriott Center. Demin, Dybantsa, Branch. That promise continues to be made manifest through the star power of those who bear the number 3, and Bruce Branch is not only the third of his name, he's the third of his line.

Some speculate that Branch's number guarantees that Dybantsa will be heading to the NBA this season. I don't know if I'd call a photo taken from a recruiting visit evidence of AJ's exit, but what it does mean is that Branch's birthright is to follow in the steps of those before him.

BYU to the NBA. That's what the number 3 represents in Provo, Utah.
