The people have spoken, and it really wasn't all that close.

BYU football may be facing something of a transitional period. With the recent controversy surrounding the current starting quarterback, Jake Retzlaff, the team faces a pivotal decision in the near future.

If Jake Retzlaff can't play, who should step into the QB1 role?

Given the choice between Treyson Bourguet, McCae Hillstead, or Bear Bachmeier, who do the fans want to see calling the shots from under center? Well, we asked Cougar Nation, and the response was loud and certain.

So, by order of the people, McCae Hillstead is stepping up to become the starting quarterback. The transfer from Utah State was highly coveted as a transfer prospect despite only having one season with the Aggies. A 3-star QB and starter of four games for his squad in Logan during his freshman year, Hillstead completed 94 of his 158 passes for 1,062 yards in his eight appearances.

Now, with the door possibly open for a new identity calling the shots, Hillstead apparently has the nod from Cougar Nation.

Worth noting was Bear Bachmeier coming in second place in this poll, as a freshman who wasn't even present for Spring practices. Highly talented and very hotly pursued out of high school by the best of the best of college football, Bear might have a shot at claiming the starting nod sooner rather than later.

He'll be someone to keep an eye on -- he may become the future of Rodriguez's offense in the near future. For now, however, fans lay their faith on Hillstead.
