BYU football are heavy underdogs for their home matchup against Notre Dame

The Cougs are getting disrespected.

The disrespect simply doesn't stop with BYU football, and we're still months away from the beginning of the season.

The marquee matchup of the season, a home battle with fellow CFP slight Notre Dame, will catch the nation's attention. A new version of the Holy War. The Pop-Tarts Bowl that never was. A single meeting to prove once and for all who deserved their spot more. The meeting is absolutely soaring when it comes to entry prices, obviously, but according to oddsmakers, this may not be the most competitive game of the year by any stretch.

The odds opened at -10.5 in favor of the Fighting Irish. On the road. In front of a sold-out LaVell Edwards Stadium crowd.

Yeah, we'll see about that.

BYU Sports Nation certainly felt the Cougars were the target of deep-rooted disrespect when they addressed this line on the show.

"Ten and a half is a massive, massive spread!" Jarom Jordan exploded in disbelief. "BYU is 23-4 in the last two seasons. And they are hosting Notre Dame in week five. It's not like it's week one, and they just think Notre Dame is going to be way better out of the gate. If it were earlier in the season and there were bigger question marks, I probably could have understood more."

"They have to come from South Bend to Provo, where BYU has been so good. BYU has not lost at home over the past two seasons except for that one Kansas game!"

The man has a point, and despite the fact that the Fighting Irish are expected to be a leader for the National Championship this year, BYU's ravine of a betting line that separates them from their week 5 adversaries is just more disrespect heading in the direction of a BYU team that continues to prove the doubters wrong.

I can remember in 2024, when an unbeaten BYU approached a .500 UCF team on the road as 3-point underdogs to the Knights. That was a game BYU won comfortably. The Cougars were likewise slighted against rival Utah at home last season, when the Utes were more heavily favored despite BYU's Holy War winning streak, superior record, and superior ranking. Again, that has a game that BYU was hosting.

Sure, Notre Dame could march into Provo and play like the best team in the nation -- that might just be who they are -- but in response, I'd like to echo the immortal words of BYU coach Kalani Sitake.

Thay don't know, but they're about to find out!
