BYU football just secured the commitment of four-star offensive lineman Alai Kalaniuvalu as he flips from Oregon... for the second time.
You read that right. During his recruiting process, this O-line prospect from Bishop Gorman High School committed to Oregon, then BYU, then Oregon again, and finally was announced to have finally enrolled at BYU for (hopefully) the final time.
Securing Alai's commitment cannot be understated in levels of significance for this offense. Highly recruited out of high school by the sport's very elite, the player who's last name shares its first half with his new head coach's first name was a prime target for many exceptional programs across the nation. Kalani (Sitake) certainly celebrated with a shuffle upon receiving the good news.
Don't believe that this lineman was so intensely sought after? Take a walk with me. Alabama, USC, Michigan, Oregon (but you knew that), Georgia, Tennessee, Washington, Utah, Texas A&M... did I lose you?
The point is, this kid who originally played at Timpview High School before darting to Las Vegas with Bishop Gorman was a top priority for some of the very best programs in the game, and now he'll be the first line of attack for BYU.
Having played center during his high school career, he's listed as an inside offensive lineman on popular recruiting sites, though expected to retain his center position in D1 play. Another follower of an apparent Oregon exodus, Kalaniuvalu joins an increasingly rich tradition of offensive linemen entering the stratosphere of the NFL out of BYU's boot camp.
