BYU football is unbeaten six weeks into the 2025 college football season. 5-0 with three power four caliber victories feels pretty good, and a commanding home win over West Virginia feels pretty good despite the deceptively tight 38-24 final score.
That's all well and good -- this team's role at the moment is about winning football games. Without a loss, not many can deny the team's efficacy in the greater picture of college football, even without a top-50 victory on the schedule (that's a scheduling defect, not a program defect). Win football games, and inevitable upsets and losses ahead will shuffle the order. And after week 6, the order has certainly been shuffled.
BYU jumps up five spots in this week's edition, from 23 to 18, with critical results like Texas' loss at Florida and Penn State's loss at previously zero-win UCLA ejecting the reputation-over-resume inclusions from the top 25 entirely.
Say what you will about BYU's lack of serious competition to this point in the year, but three power four wins are three more than Texas and three more than Penn State. Iowa State dropped a road battle with a sneakily competitive Cincinnati side, Florida State stumbled against Miami, and Vanderbilt failed to complete an upset in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Each of those are respectable losses, and each of those teams remain with a number next to their names -- rightfully so.
A shoutout to Texas Tech after beating previously unbeaten Houston and finally helping the Big 12 eclipse the boy's club inside the top 10. They remain the Big 12 frontrunner, and their matchup with BYU could be the Big 12 game of the year if this wave continues.
