BYU football slips back beneath Texas Tech in latest Big 12 Power Rankings

That's assuming Tech isn't smitten from the face of the earth by that point.

I no longer know what to believe about college football. Players are gambling on their teams and returning to play, safeties are breaking their feet, receivers are retiring in the middle of their college career, and I'm still here typing away about how much BYU football needs to have an incredible year in 2026.

Yes, I'm also tired of hearing (er, reading) my own voice at this point.

But with the latest news surrounding Brendan Sorsby, the transfer quarterback whose eligibility was revoked by the NCAA for placing thousands of bets -- including several on his own team -- while participating as a college athlete, only to receive an injunction and a slap on the wrist thanks to the court's decision to reinstate him.

And Texas Tech still has the audacity to insist they have the sport's best interest at heart. I watched that program pin BYU football to the ground and force them to eat dirt on multiple occassions last season, but this really irks me, Raiders.

It irks the rest of the Big 12 Conference, as well, as all other 15 programs have voiced their outrage at Tech for compromising their integrity for the sake of their expensive transfer quarterback. The league is in talks of canceling future matchups with Texas Tech so long as they green-light Sorsby to play, or even expelling the program from the league entirely (though there's little evidence to support the latter's likelihood for now).

Still, as things stand today, Brendan Sorsby will be available to play for the beginning of the Big 12 Conference schedule, and that means the Red Raiders hopped back on top of the conference power rankings, according to On3.

We should take a moment to acknowledge the immense blessing of seeing BYU football as a perennial contender for the Big 12 Conference championship. In the dull drums of independence, the Cougars were little more than a mediocre program fighting for bowl eligibility every season. But after just one poor year in BYU's inauguaral season of Big 12 membership, the Cougars have rattled off 23 victories in the past two seasons to just four losses, and now find themselves as an undisputed contender for the title.

This is the status quo today, but things can change in an instant with the current landscape of college athletics. Count your blessings, and all that.

If Texas Tech can manage to maintain their schedule and performs as the nation anticipates behind Brendan Sorsby, the Red Raiders will be the heavy favorite to repeat as champions. But BYU football is not far behind by any measure. Don't get too comfortable, Tech.
