BYU NFL Draft Profiles: Is Tanner Wall the next Daniel Sorensen as a starting NFL safety?

For some strange reason, nobody is talking about Tanner Wall as a viable NFL prospect, despite his All-Big 12 First Team credentials. With his intelligence, leadership, and elite athleticism, the BYU captain has what it takes to stick in the NFL.

As we count down the days preparing for the NFL Draft from April 23-25, we’ll be profiling this year‘s crop of BYU players who are hoping to hear their names called on draft day. Today, we will focus on safety, Tanner Wall.

Tanner Wall's BYU career summary

Tanner Wall is everything BYU fans could ask for as a player, a person, and representative of the school we love. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Brazil. He was a co-captain in 2024 and a team captain in 2025. Last year he was a Jason Whitten Man of the Year Semifinalist and was named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

Wall was named to the First Team Academic All-American Team TWICE after graduating from BYU's prestigious finance program with a 3.86 GPA.

Forget football for just a moment. Tanner Wall is the embodiment of everything BYU stands for.

Now, the football side. Over the course of his five-year BYU career the redshirt senior appeared in 45 games with 147 tackles and seven interceptions. He was spectacular in his 2025 campaign with 71 tackles and four picks.

Tanner was named All-Big 12 First Team in 2025 for his stellar play.

Tanner Wall's Relative Athletic Score

A player's RAS — or Relative Athletic Score — compares their performance in combine drills against other players at their same position. A RAS of 8.0, for example, means the player scored in the 80th percentile relative to players at their same position. Tanner Wall's RAS is flat out awesome:

While at 6-foot-1 and 196 pounds Wall's undersized for an NFL safety, he's an overall elite athlete. His 8.78 RAS means he's almost in the top 90th percentile among safeties despite his small-ish size pulling down his score. His explosion grade is "elite" and his agility grade is "great". Wall is far more athletic than most people realize and he can hang in an NFL secondary.

Tanner Wall's comparable player

This one's too easy: Tanner Wall's NFL comp is former BYU great Daniel Sorensen.

Sorensen went undrafted in 2013 but still managed to make the Kansas City Chiefs' roster as a rookie and appeared in nine games. By his second season he cracked the rotation and recorded 23 tackles, two passes defended, and a sack in 16 games. Sorensen went on to enjoy a 10-year NFL career with 130 games, 41 starts, 432 tackles, four interceptions, and four sacks.

Tanner has the skills, athleticism, and the smarts to follow a similar path.

Remember, Wall was an All-Big 12 First Team performer in 2025! He was arguably the single best safety in a Power Four conference last year! The dude can ball, he's a borderline genius, and he's an incredible leader. He has everything NFL teams are looking for, except for maybe an inch or two and another 10 pounds.

At 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds, Daniel Sorensen had that extra inch and weight NFL scouts were looking for, but Tanner Wall's Relative Athletic Score of 8.78 blows Sorensen's 5.22 RAS out of the water.

Speaking on a personal level, I am legitimately baffled there are zero -- I mean, literally ZERO -- NFL mock drafts and big boards that have Wall's name on them. I feel like right now I know something that the draft "experts" don't know, and it's this:

Tanner Wall is going to make an NFL roster next year.

And he's going to have a long, successful NFL career.
