BYU Players in the NFL Week 1: Fred Warner makes 49ers history and Tyler Allgeier finally gets fed

Here’s the Week 17 summary of former BYU Cougars in the NFL. Players are ranked based on their year-to-date performance.

Fred Warner, LB, San Francisco 49ers

Stats: 11 tackles, 1 pass defended, 1 forced fumble

Fred Warner is the best linebacker in the NFL, and he proved that in Week 1. Warner was everywhere in the 49ers impressive win against the Rams in Australia to kick off the season. Fred's fourth quarter forced fumble was clutch, gave the 49ers the ball on the Rams' side of the field, and led to a field goal to salt away the victory. His 11 tackles led his team in the win.

Warner also made 49ers history in the game becoming the all-time tackles leader for the storied franchise. The Hall of Fame can already go ahead and fit him for a gold jacket.

Puka Nacua, WR, Los Angeles Rams

Stats: 5 receptions, 74 yards

The Rams sleepwalked through their 27-7 loss to the 49ers in Australia, but at least Puka showed up. He led his listless team in both receptions (five), targets (nine), and receiving yards (74), as per usual.

Tyler Allgeier, RB, Arizona Cardinals

Stats: 17 carries, 61 yards; 2 receptions, 9 yards

It was a solid start to Allgeier's tenure with the Cardinals who pulled off a shocking win over the Chargers. After four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons -- and being criminally underutilized in three of them -- Tyler will be a focal point of the Cardinals' offense along with fellow running back and first round rookie Jeremiyah Love (11 carries, 41 yards, 1 touchdown).

Zayne Anderson, S, Miami Dolphins

Stats: 5 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1 pass defended

This is outstanding! After five seasons playing primarily special teams with the Chiefs and Packers, Zayne signed with the Dolphins this offseason and won the starting job. He had five tackles, including a tackle for loss, and a pass defended in just the third start of his 48-game career.

Chris Brooks, RB, Green Bay Packers

Stats: 7 carries, 29 yards

With running back Josh Jacobs suspended, Chris Brooks drew the start today for the Packers and carried the ball seven times for 29 yards. The fourth-year pro also provided solid pass blocking in third down packages and has carved out a consistent, impactful role in Green Bay's offense.

Ryan Rehkow, P, Cincinnati Bengals

Stats: 1 punt, 51 yards

The third-year pro was only called upon once in the Bengals victory over the Buccaneers, but he made the most of the opportunity with a 51-yard punt. The net yardage was only 38 yards after the return, so he'll want to improve that.

Kyle Van Noy, DE, Minnesota Vikings

Stats: 1 tackle

Now entering his 13th NFL season, Van Noy only recently signed with the Vikings and is still getting up to speed with his new team. Even then, he drew the start with his new team and was deployed situationally, registering one tackle.

Carsen Ryan, TE, Cleveland Browns

Stats: 2 tackles

While the seventh-round rookie didn't record any receptions, he did make an impact in the Browns' Week 1 loss. He recorded two tackles on special teams, and that's very promising for Ryan. Special teams is often the best way for late-round picks to contribute, and that's exactly what Carsen did in his NFL debut.

Jack Kelly, LB, New York Giants

Stats: No stats recorded

Like Carsen Ryan, fellow rookie Jack Kelly also made his NFL debut and played primarily on special teams. The sixth-round pick played primarily on special teams under the bright lights of Sunday Night Football but didn't record any stats.

Zach Wilson, QB, New Orleans Saints

Stats: Did not play

Unless something unfortunate happens to starting quarterback Tyler Shough, Zach Wilson will is going to draw a lot of DNPs this year. He's still battling Spencer Rattler for the QB2 spot, but backup quarterbacks rarely play.
