BYU is coming off a convincing but somewhat flawed 27-3 victory over Stanford to get to 2-0 on the season. In this weekly "BYU Stats Nerd" series, we will highlight some of the more interesting stats from individual games and the season as a whole. There are some incredible stats on tap this week.

BYU's defense has allowed 14 total rushing yards... over two games!

Defensive coordinator Jay Hill is a wizard. Against Portland State, BYU's defense yielded negative five rushing yards on 24 attempts. Last week against Stanford, the Cougars gave up 19 rushing yards on 24 attempts. Using some simple math, that means BYU has given up 14 total rushing yards on 48 attempts through two games. Unbelievable.

LJ Martin is averaging 9.3 yards per carry

In BYU's first game against Portland State, LJ Martin rushed eight times for 130 yards. Last week against Stanford, he ran the ball 18 times for 110 yards. In the season that gives the star junior running back 26 carries for 241 yards, averaging an amazing 9.3 yards per carry. If LJ can stay healthy for the full season, he could have an all-time great rushing season for the Cougars.

Tight end Carsen Ryan's 83 receiving yards has nearly matched last year's leading TE

Through two games with BYU, Carsen Ryan has 83 receiving yards. Last year BYU's leading receiver from the tight end spot was freshman Ryner Swanson with 91 yards on the season. Cougar fans have been pounding the tables to get the tight end position more involved in the passing game. Ryan is doing just that.

Will Ferrin has made a school-record 22 straight field goals

This is an incredible stat. Field goal kicking in college football is usually shaky. It's not all that uncommon for 20-year-old college kickers to push 40-yard field goals wide left. Sometimes as football fans we get spoiled watching the NFL and seeing the 32 best field goal kickers on the plant repeatedly drill 52 yarders. BYU is incredibly fortunate to have perhaps the best kicker in college football wearing the royal blue.
