BYU began its 2025 season with an impressive 69-0 trouncing of Portland State. In this weekly "BYU Stats Nerd" series, we will highlight some of the more interesting stats from each Cougars football game, and this week's batch of stats is incredible.
Portland State rushed for -3 yards
The Vikings second play from scrimmage was an 18 yard run. Over the rest of the course of the game Portland State rushed for negative 21 yards. On the day BYU held Portland State to negative three rushing yards on 22 attempts, a feat of brilliance from Jay Hill's defense that almost defies logic.
Dominique McKenzie took his first career touch for a 41-yard touchdown
Redshirt freshman Dominique McKenzie appeared in two games last year during his redshirt season but didn't touch the ball. Early in the fourth quarter he got his hands on the ball for the first time in a Cougars uniform and took it 41 yards to the house. The returned missionary seems to have shaken off the mission rust and showed off his blazing speed.

Will Ferrin tied a BYU record 56-yard field goal
Last year Will Ferrin was named Big 12 Kicker of the Year and All-Big 12 First Team. He showed that he had ice in his veins when drilling the game-winning field goal against rival Utah at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Coming into 2025 he was named to several preseason All-American teams and he didn't disappoint against Portland State. In BYU's blowout win Ferrin drilled a 56-yard field goal, tying the all-time record in BYU program history.

BYU had 14 different ball carriers
After taking a 49-0 lead at the half, BYU emptied the benches in the second half. With the goal of keeping the clock running as fast as possible, the Cougars pounded the run with a variety of ball carriers. In all, 14 different Cougars toted the rock against the Vikings. This included lesser known players like Lucky Finau (8 carries, 32 yards), Jovesa Damuni (7 carries, 44 yards), and Charles Miska (6 carries, 14 yards, 1 TD) getting some valuable reps.
BYU had more points (69) than Portland State had total yards (53)
That mind-blowing stat doesn't require any additional analysis.
