Caitlin Clark's favorite player is a former BYU basketball legend, but that shouldn't surprise anyone

If you've watched Caitlin play basketball in any capacity, the player comparisons write themselves.

Have you heard of Caitlin Clark? Who am I kidding? Of course you have. The best women's college basketball in recent memory lit up the hardwood every time she took the floor for the Iowa Hawkeyes. With her distinct style and killer's edge, Clark could pull from anywhere within the half-court barrier.

3-point marksman. Absolute bomber. Complete flight risk.

Naturally, comparisons to other all-time great shooters sprouted from the soil in her vicinity. Steph Curry, naturally, was thrown out at any opportunity. Even Trae Young would be a fair comparison, as her affinity for dime dropping was second to none with a jumper like hers.

But one comparison was planted directly in the face of college hoops fanatics. Like a sprawling banner of collegiate gospel, her true nature could only be compared to one player's archetype and one player alone: James Taft "Jimmer" Fredette.

The long-range trey-balls, her individual style, her ability to draw the attention of the nation unlike any of her peers, Clark launched three pointers from a different area code. From no man's land. She blurs the line of reasonability where any time her hands meet the basketball, a shot could be going up. And, as so many have learned in recent years, if her shot is going up, it very well could be going in.

So it shouldn't be any surprise when a recent conversation emerged between Clark and another WNBA great, Sue Bird, in which the current Indiana Fever standout and former collegiate dynamo proclaimed her affinity towards one former Player of the Year and BYU Cougar legend.

Regarding Caitlin's inspiration for her current skillset, Bird asked about any inspirations. Had Clark mimicked the game of any other players? Did she develop these skills all by herself? Or some combination of the two?

After rattling off a few names, Clark caught herself as the topic swung to Jimmer Fredette.

"I always watch Steph, or even Jimmer, who I love," she began. "I told Jimmer this when we were doing 'Sue's Places', like he was one of my favorite players growing up. There was the famous song 'Teach Me How to Jimmer' and I had the shirt!"

She referenced a previous meetup with one of the greatest collegiate basketball players of all time, where the two had a shootout.

Though Jimmer famously didn't pan out as hoped in the NBA, Clark carries the torch of the long-range shooter she grew up watching.
