Formerly a four-star forward out of Orem High School and the fifth-rated recruit in the State of Utah, Chamberlain Burgess' college basketball career has careened off course as he transfers from JUCO Snow College to Weber State in Ogden, Utah. It's official: Burgess has de-committed from BYU basketball.

It was a rocky path for Burgess following his initial commitment to BYU basketball. The relative of assistant coach Chris Burgess, Chamberlain transferred from Lone Peak High School in Alpine, Utah, to Orem High School in, well, Orem, Utah, for his senior season, and committed to join Kevin Young's program following his two-year missionary service.
But personal events brought him home early, silently moving him to Snow College in Ephraim for a season before officially being out of the picture for BYU hoops.
It's a tragic turn of events for a BYU basketball program actively hunting players of Burgess' archetype -- athletic forwards who can stretch out to the three-point line and space out the offense, and stifle the opposition on the defensive end -- though not entirely unexpected now a year after his career flipped on its head.
Burgess originally chose BYU over offers from Illinois, Utah Valley, and Hawai'i. I'm sure after watching Illinois make a run to the Final Four, Burgess can't help but wonder how different his current trajectory would be had he just opted to go to Champaign instead of Provo.
By all appearances, it looks like Chamberlain didn't appear in any games for Snow College, as his profile shows zero stats, and the team's cumulative stats page doesn't list Burgess as a participant. He received zero stars from 247's junior college transfer ratings.
While it's unclear where Burgess' collegiate career will ultimately end up, it's sad to see a player once on track to star for his hometown team lose control of the narrative. While there remains speculation that Burgess will join the team in 2027, when his original scholarship is ready, questions of honor code eligibility loom as he joins the Wildcats of Weber State in 2026.
