BYU football handled business against their FCS opener, Utah Tech, in a 63-7 final. As expected, BYU is 1-0 on the season, and Kalani Sitake's hearty crew of veteran talent looks to be clicking according to design.
Bear Bachmeier completed 16 of his 20 passes, and watched the second half from the sidelines, having already stretched the lead to 42 points by the midway break in his sleeker, thinner, optimized sophomore frame.
LJ Martin dominated with his cleats in the turf, as is to be expected, and Aaron Roderick opted to give his running back room plenty of reps behind Martin, keeping the reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year's legs fresh.
The receiver room appears to be in great hands -- pun intended -- with freshman and Lehi High School product Legend Glasker collecting three touchdowns all his own with the acceleration and maneuverability of an F-15 fighter jet. The rest of the receiving room got some burn as well, with Kyler Kasper and the tight end duo of Lyons and Saleapaga as the standouts.
On defense, Kelly Poppinga's unit tormented the poor Trailblazers with three interceptions (courtesy of Therrian Alexander, Evan Johnson, and Matthias Leach) and a fumble recovery, allowing just 7 points on the night after the Cougars had already built a 56-0 lead and rolled in the reserves.
The only concerning developments of the afternoon were injuries to safety Raider Damuni and running back Sione Moa, both of which are expected to return this season, but will miss several weeks at least.

BYU football did what they were supposed to do in Week One: win, and win big.
Now, they approach their first real test of the season: the Big 12 opener against Arizona.
At home in Provo for the second straight weekend, Sitake's team loads up for a "prove it" matchup with Noah Fifita's Wildcats team. BYU is currently on a five-game win streak against the Wildcats, starting back when Kalani Sitake coached his first game at the head of his alma mater, and walk-on Jake Oldroyd drilled the game-winning field goal in the final seconds.
As Big 12 peers, BYU took down Arizona in 2024 in a lopsided 41-19 victory in Provo, and escaped a rain-delayed double-overtime classic to remain unbeaten in the early season.
This year, BYU is once again expected to escape victorious as a favorite to win the Big 12 Conference outright. They have the benefit of home-field advantage, but beating a hungry Big 12 foe will be no small feat with the Arlington-sized target on the Cougars' back.
