BYU football's unbeaten streak is dead, but that doesn't mean the entire season is. After suffering the team's first loss of the year in a road contest against Big 12 foe UCF, the eighth-ranked Cougars approach a battle with Arizona State -- one they intend to win.
On the surface, this should be a comfortable win for BYU. At 6-1 compared to ASU's 4-3, the Cougars are angry, frustrated, and kicking themselves over a double-overtime loss off the heels of a program-defining victory over Notre Dame. 7-0 should have been a certainty. Now, BYU is clinging to a second-place tie in the Big 12 Conference standings. That's a space in which the Cougars cannot afford to exist if they want a chance at a CFP berth.
Now at home on Halloween, BYU football intends to leave no doubt against an inconsistent and unreliable ASU team.
Kenny Dillingham's team represented the Big 12 in the College Football Playoff during the Sun Devils' first season of Big 12 membership with the duo of Cam Skattebo and Sam Leavitt carrying the load and barreling through the competition. They took down the Playoff-hungry Cougars that year in a game that saw Chase Roberts' Hail Mary catch fall just two yards short of the goal line in a game that ultimately decided who would appear in the Big 12 Conference championship.
This year's team is nothing like that team. Against Texas A&M a team that opened the year as a top-10 program but has since proved to be a bad SEC team, ASU lost by 28 points. Against Baylor, the wheels came off in a 55-19 drubbing. Then on a visit to Lubbock, the Sun Devils were crushed by 28 once again.
Kalani Sitake's team has no intention of losing back-to-back games after a 6-0 start. Expect them to come out of the gate red-hot on Saturday. Here's everything you need to tune in.
