Back on the winning trail, or at least braving the weeds back to that path, BYU basketball finally got its streak-breaking win on a road trip to Waco, as AJ Dybantsa and Rob Wright III each punched 30+ points down the gullet of their adversaries and collected the team's first win after four straight losses.
Next on the to-do list, pick up a momentum-swinging victory over the pattering Colorado Buffaloes, a team caught in the sticky substance that floats along the bottom of the Big 12 Conference standings. Colorado now sits with a 14-11 record (4-8 Big 12) and is left gasping for air after a suffocating 44-78 loss at the hands of Texas Tech (yowch).
If you thought that BYU's losing streak was agonizing -- and losing five of six games is far from comfortable -- you may want to avert your eyes when looking at the Buffaloes' recent body of work. Eight losses in their last 10 games include defeats at the hands of ASU, Baylor, UCF, Cincinnati, and West Virginia, and an unmentionable result against Iowa State during that stretch.
But don't expect Colorado to play floor mat as they enter the Marriott Center on Saturday.
In that stretch, the Buffs also nearly stole victories against some of the league's elites, including a seven-point loss to Kansas and a two-point dogfight against Texas Tech. The latter result occurred over a month ago; their 34-point loss to the Red Raiders is a more accurate snapshot of the current state of affairs in Boulder.
BYU basketball has their mojo back. A fire has been lit beneath this team, and though their defensive chops have yet to catch up, the Big 3 of Saunders, Dybantsa, and Wright have more than carried the scoring load.
The win at Baylor did not arrive comfortably, however, even as the Cougs pulled ahead by 17 points in the second half. There is no such thing as an easy win in a conference as loaded as the Big 12, and Colorado is no exception.
But Kevin Young and company have far more at stake. A win in Provo means a perfect week for the first time in a long time, and with March Madness implications woven in the fabric of every result, this team will need to capitalize on the (massive air quotes here) "easy" games.
The Cougars get a chance to stabilize on Saturday.
