BYU basketball just took down Villanova in their season-opener. I'm sorry, but that's just still so surreal to admit. It may take me all season to get used to the new reality for BYU hoops (unless perhaps the UConn game delivers a rude awakening), because there are athletes all over the floor. No blind spots; this team seems capable of matching up with anyone.

Players capable of discombobulating their defenders with a tornado of dribble moves. Players with the length and elasticity to stretch into openings, stop on a dime, and calmly deliver a bucket. Players with a combination of strength and power that cannot be replicated with organic matter. All of them were on full display in a gutsy win against a historically strong Big East team on Monday night. So naturally, you'll be curious as to when the Cougars will suit up again on the hardwood.

Well, for the next two games on BYU's slate, they'll be sampling from a more typical BYU non-conference schedule with subsequent home games against smaller schools. In this season's case, it'll be Holy Cross on Saturday and Delaware on the following Tuesday to deliver our fill of basketball nirvana and provide quote-unquote "tune-up" games for a team staring down an approaching UConn from the horizon.

In the meantime, trying not to look over the heads of the capable opponents before them, the Cougars will be on full display in front of a Marriott Center crowd for the first time this season. For many, this will be their first chance to watch AJ Dybantsa play in person. They'll get a front-row seat (metaphorically for most) to the Richie Saunders-Keba Keita hustle squad. An unobstructed view of Rob Wrights tactical wizardry. Stare into the face of pure basketball damnation as Kennard Davis shuts down the poor unfortunate soul who drew his assignment.

But for most of us, watching in person won't be our reality this weekend. Regardless, you should tune in for this one through the magic box in your living room.
