BYU basketball needs a win. Through the brutal gauntlet of the Big 12 Conference, BYU has gotten the worst end of every challenging matchup to this point. A three-point loss to Arizona at home, an eight-point near-miss at Kansas, and a blowout humiliation at Texas Tech have made up every meeting against the biggest and best schools in the league.
But in a land where giants control the hardwood, BYU basketball finally believes this is the year they cement themselves as a serious competitor. It's taken a while to catch up to expectations, however.
Sure, they've won the games they were supposed to, two wins against rival Utah, a W against Kansas State and TCU, and a dominant romp through Arizona State in Provo, but BYU hoops have yet to steal a toss-up game against one of the biggest names in the conference.
Perhaps it's only logical, but BYU is winning against lesser competition, and slipping against the greater. It's just that this year's edition promised a bit more to this point in the season.
AJ Dybantsa is competing for an All-American bid and the number one pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. Richie Saunders is an All-Big 12 first-teamer and one of the grittiest players in college hoops. Rob Wright is a five-star point guard with one of the tightest dribbles in the nation. They, with the momentum of last year's Sweet 16 squad, entered the year with all-time high expectations, but have stumbled a bit out of the gate, failing to separate themselves from the BYU of yesterday.
This team needs a win to get back on track, and the mediocre Oklahoma State Cowboys offer just that opportunity in Stillwater this week.
