For those who haven't been properly introduced, meet Austin Goosby. Goosby is a combo guard standing at 6-foot-5 out of Melissa, Texas, and has had the attention of BYU basketball for quite some time now. A talent straddling the 4-star, 5-star line, he's a top-30 player in the 2026 class per 247 Sports' composite ranking.

On top of all that, he's notably a member of BYU's sponsor religion, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

For years, BYU was forced to make the most of local LDS talent due to the university's strict code of conduct and spotty basketball history, filling in the gaps with any non-LDS players willing to abide by those same guidelines.

Mark Pope got the ball rolling with signing impressive non-LDS talent during his time with BYU, where, at times, the lineup on the floor would be entirely non-LDS players.

But luring the truly exceptional LDS talent from across the nation was far from a guarantee, as players like Jabari Parker and Frank Jackson opted to utilize their five-star ratings to sign with blue blooded Duke. A fair decision, certainly, but a harsh reality to swallow for BYU.

But under Kevin Young, and with the recruiting power of the Big 12, BYU basketball has a new identity. A fresh reputation. I don't need to explain why adding the likes of AJ Dybantsa is a revolutionary adjustment for the program as a whole. The trajectory has been knocked upwards, skyrocketing through the ceiling of the program in the past.

So when Austin Goosby, one of the best players in high school basketball who happens to be LDS, gets a call from BYU, he knows he'd be joining an NBA-caliber training facility where he can face some of the toughest teams in the nation year-in, year-out.

Per Vanquish the Foe's Robby McCombs, BYU's staff has set an in-person visit at Goosby's home for tonight, as soon as possible.

We'll have to wait and see, as he's showing interest in some other highly-respected programs with their eyes on his talents, but BYU is a much stronger contender than they would be in years past. We'll hope for good news down the road.
