Kevin Young reveals BYU has a player to fill the center role, but it's too early

It's just a bit too early to name BYU's starting center, but there's a player on the list.

Oh, you of little faith, if you doubted that BYU basketball had a plan to fill the starting center position for the upcoming season, doubt no more. Head coach Kevin Young took a moment in a recent press conference to dispel any questions about whether BYU basketball would have a quality center in 2026 -- they will, and no, his name is not Khadim Mboup.

It's understandable if the endless slip-n-slide of recruiting whiffs could be disheartening to BYU fans hoping to see their team in a position to succeed in the brutal Big 12 Conference. I've gone into great detail about countless 7-footers, floor spacers, and defensive stalwarts who ultimately decided to shrug off BYU's interest in favor of other programs across the nation. Luigi Suigo's recent disappointment really stung, when the Cougars were rumored to be in contention for months before he withdrew from the NBA draft only to commit to Villanova.

It took a little wind out of our sails, but according to Young, BYU basketball believes they have their guy -- it's just too early to name any names right now.

"I get asked it every day, no matter where I'm at: the big situation," Young said in front of the media. "We've been in lockstep with one specific guy for a while. There are a lot of logistical things that have to get ironed out on some of these guys, given their academic situation and where they've played."

"We've been locked into one guy in particular. Can't say too much about it. And then there are other things going on as well."

That's all that we needed to hear. No vague statements about a plan being in place. No half-hearted answers about how everything will work out. BYU's head coach has put our anxieties to rest by simply stating the program has their guy for the position, but with the logistics of getting this player (likely an international prospect, from his initial quote regarding academics and where he's played) being the biggest obstacle, it's just too soon to say more than what he has.

"I appreciate the enthusiasm of the fanbase in terms of wanting to have interest in the roster, but that's where that part stands."
