Love or hate him, BYU's Aaron Roderick has a perfect record at this position

While Aaron Roderick has some work to do with BYU's offense after an abysmal showing against Texas Tech, all three of his last QBs at BYU have now played in the NFL after Kedon Slovis took the field for the Arizona Cardinals.

While BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick has some things to figure out after the offensive debacle against Texas Tech last week, he's an absolute maestro when it comes to identifying and developing NFL talent at quarterback.

On Sunday, Kedon Slovis saw his first NFL action for the Arizona Cardinals, attempting his first career pass, which fell incomplete. Slovis was inserted late during a blowout, but he's now officially in the NFL record books.

That makes Aaron Roderick a perfect three-for-three in his last quarterbacks at BYU not only ending up in the NFL, but taking the field.

Zach Wilson, Miami Dolphins

After a glorious career at BYU, Zach Wilson was the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Credit to Coach Roderick for identifying and developing Wilson, who was a 3-star high school talent with a ho-hum 86 rating at 247 Sports.

Unfortunately, he ended up with the New York Jets, a franchise known for setting up young quarterbacks to fail, helping them fail, blaming them while they fail, then jettisoning them. That's exactly what happened with Zach (Side note: I'm convinced that if Zach Wilson ended up with the San Francisco 49ers, he would have had Brock Purdy's career).

Wilson has thrown for 6,325 yards with 23 touchdowns in his NFL career.

He is currently the primary backup with the Miami Dolphins and has appeared in two games this year. At just 26 years old, he should still have a long NFL career ahead of himself and if he lands in the right situation he could legitimately start and succeed somewhere. If you don't think that's possible, just look at Sam Darnold and Geno Smith who failed with the Jets and have succeeded elsewhere.

Jaren Hall, Minnesota Vikings (2023)

Jaren Hall succeeded Zach Wilson and piloted BYU's offense in 2021 and 2022. Like Wilson, Jaren Hall was a fine but unspectacular high school prospect as a 3-star talent with an 84 rating. Aaron Roderick saw Hall's potential and got the best out of him.

Jaren was a 2023 fifth-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings. His short NFL career has been (or was) a bit tragic. As a rookie, he appeared in three games with two starts. He was injured in one of his early games just as he was starting to look somewhat comfortable. But in a start later in the year, he was benched mid-game after the Vikings' offense sputtered with him under center.

Hall was released by Minnesota after his rookie season, spent last year on Seattle's practice squad, but did not sign with a team this year.

Kedon Slovis, Arizona Cardinals

Kedon Slovis took over for Jaren Hall in 2023, Slovis's only season in Provo. Under Coach Roderick, Slovis turned his one year at BYU into something of a redemption tour to end his college career.

Slovis spent three season at USC. After a phenomenal freshman season in 2019 (3,502 passing yards, 30 TDs) he appeared to regress a bit in each of the next two seasons. In 2022 he transferred to Pitt, had a forgettable season in a boring offense, and hit the transfer portal once again. In 2023 he landed in Provo with Aaron Roderick.

In his only season in Provo, Slovis appeared in just eight games due to injury, and the entire offense struggled to adjust in BYU's first season in the Big 12. But Slovis put together enough good tape at BYU to end up joining the Houston Texans in 2024 as an undrafted free agent.

In 2025, Slovis signed with the Arizona Cardinals' practice squad. He was elevated to the 53-man roster on October 11th. About a month later, he made his NFL debut after starting quarterback Kyler Murray missed the game due to injury, and the game got out of hand behind backup Jacoby Brissett.

Sure, Kedon Slovis has only attempted one pass in his young NFL career, but that throw makes Aaron Roderick a perfect three-for-three in identifying NFL talent to lead BYU's offense.
