BYU is good enough to beat No. 6 Iowa State last week on to then get destroyed by like a million points by UCF a few days later -- at home!

If any Big 12 fan base can relate with the whiplash Cougar fans are experiencing it's the poor souls who cheer for West Virginia hoops.

The Mountaineers beat Kansas by 11 points early on in Big 12 play. That same team then lost to Utah -- UTAH! -- less than two weeks ago. It's one thing to lose as a heavy favorite to a tournament-bound team like UCF like BYU did. It's quite another thing to lose to the lowly Utah Utes when every Big 12 win is crucial for a bubble team like West Virginia.

BYU and West Virginia are impossible to figure out. This game could be a 62-58 rock fight, or it could end turn out to be elite-level basketball. Good luck figuring out which teams are going to show up. That said, here's what we know about the Mountaineers.

West Virginia's season recap

The Mountaineers sport a 16-12 record this season with a respectable 7-8 record in Big 12 play, just one game behind BYU in the conference standings.

Kenpom ranks West Virginia No. 64 overall, so the epitome of an NCAA Tournament bubble team. Kenpom ranks BYU No. 21, but we all know things have changed since Richie Saunders was lost for the season with an ACL tear.

West Virginia hangs its hat on its defense. The Mountaineers rank No. 24 nationally in defensive rating, but their offense ranks just No. 146. BYU is going to need at least a couple of players other than AJ Dybantsa and Robert Wright III to step up and put the biscuit in the basket. This would be a great game for Kennard Davis Jr. and Mihailo Boskovic to knock down some shots from deep. The Cougs are going to need it.

The Mountaineers are led by guard Honor Huff at 15.2 points per game. He hoists a prolific 9.5 3-points per game and hits 36.1% of his attempts from deep. Forward Brenen Lorient, forward Treysen Eaglestaff, and guard Chance Moore each average somewhere between 10.0 and 11.2 points per game. Guard Jasper Floyd is a defensive ace who averages 1.9 steals per game.

That's what we know about West Virginia.

But who knows which Mountaineers team will show up on Saturday, and the same goes for the Cougars.
