Too Optimistic Tuesday: Legend Glasker will win the Heisman in leading BYU to the national championship

Welcome to Too Optimistic Tuesday! This weekly column reminds BYU fans why they should count their many blessings and have an abundance of hope.

Every season in every sport is full of both ups and downs. This column will amplify the "ups" and help fans quickly recover from the "downs". So put on your blue-tinted goggles and just indulge me in some hyperbole while enjoying your BYU fandom for a moment.

Legend Glasker is going to win the Heisman Trophy

In No. 14 BYU's 63-7 domination of Utah Tech to go to 1-0 on the season, true freshman wide receiver Legend Glasker lived up to his name. He had three receptions for 65 yards and two touchdowns. He also had two carries for 12 yards and another score, giving him three touchdowns in his college debut.

I've already booked my flight to New York City in mid-December to be in the room when he's awarded the Heisman Trophy later this year.

No matter how excited you are about Glasker this year, double it. No, triple it, just like Legend did with his touchdown count on Saturday.

While some faithful but somewhat casual BYU fans begin following the team in earnest when the first game of the season rolls around, more obsessive fans (like me; probably like you) follow BYU football news 365 days a year. Those of us who fall into the latter camp have repeatedly heard the hype surrounding Legend Glasker throughout the entire offseason.

Just a couple of weeks ago, ESPN's Pete Thamel said his sources at BYU were telling him that Glasker "ripped through camp," and he was told he wouldn't just be "one of the best freshmen in the Big 12, but he's going to be one of the best receivers. He could be like a first-team all-league guy. He has been the absolute buzz of camp."

I don't know about you, fellow Cougar fans, but I agree.

The way we interpret those types of quotes plus a three touchdown debut, that leads me to believe here at Too Optimistic Tuesday that Legend Glasker is winning the Heisman this year.

Oh...and BYU will win the national championship

Following the same logic, the other takeaway from Saturday's 56-point victory is that BYU will win the national championship.

This 2026 BYU squad is being called the most talented in program history. That's not an overly optimistic statement. That's just fact. And based on how dominant the Cougars looked against Utah Tech, the talent profile in Provo is special.

Bear Bachmeier has full command of the offense in Year 2 in Aaron Roderick's system. LJ Martin is impossible to tackle and the stable of young running backs looks promising. The offensive line is extremely experienced. The fretting about the lack of productivity of the wide receivers can be put to bed, and BYU's tight ends Roger Saleapaga and Walker Lyons are the real deal.

BYU's defense is experienced and aggressive. Keanu Tanuvasa and Justin Kirkland are solid in the middle. The linebackers are elite. The corners and safeties possess athleticism and skill rarely ever seen before at LaVell Edwards Stadium. There are still some questions about whether or not the Cougars' defensive ends will be able to generate a consistent pass rush in traditional 4-3 sets, but they'll figure it out.

The No. 14 Cougars looked like world beaters on Saturday.
