BYU basketball seems to be collecting 4-star talent like they're state quarters these days.
Dean Rueckert, a long-distance marksman from Provo's Timpview High School, has committed to Kevin Young and the Cougars, after whittling down his top 5 to BYU, Clemson, Washington, Utah, and Stanford. His final selection was announced on Monday night on CBS Sports' YouTube channel.
A long-time target of the Cougars and the top player from the state of Utah, Rueckert's commitment is a huge addition for the class of 2026. Still hot on the trail of fell 2026 class member and fellow member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Austin Goosby, Rueckert's value to the program is an indicator that Kevin Young's system has staying power, and could project to last well beyond Dybantsa's one-and-done campaign.
Of his commitment, BYU provided the grounds and program that appealed to him beyond simply being his favorite team growing up.
"BYU is a special place that can help me go far," he shared. "Not just basketball, but in life. And the rest of his staff have done a good job of making me feel valued. They can help me reach my goals to help me play professional basketball."
He will join the team next season, forgoing the option to serve a full-time mission in favor of pursuing his professional basketball career.
Though I shouldn't need to preach this, I still feel the need to share my thoughts on that. Serving a mission is a personal decision that should not be up for public scrutiny. Having completed missionary service myself, I can attest to the challenge and toll of removing yourself for two years. Jimmer Fredette opted not to serve a mission. Ryder Lyons recently announced his decision to serve as a missionary for a single year.
BYU basketball is getting an exceptional talent and individual in Rueckert.
