9. BYU beats La Salle in Triple overtime, but…(1979)
The earliest game on this list, hearkening back to a far different age of basketball.
Three point line? Nope. Shot clock? Nowhere to be found. Four-corners offense? Oh yeah.
In one way, it’s interesting to look at this game as a sort of time capsule: a view into a form of basketball only recalled by people who will begin expecting their first grandchildren in the next five to ten years.
This game is an all-time classic for many reasons. Danny Ainge was on the floor. Devin Durrant, too, and Fred Roberts. Those are big names in BYU basketball history, and it was no wonder that this was a team with national ranking and high expectations.
But surprisingly, even though the Cougars take this win (in an epic third overtime) it was Michael Brooks of La Salle that stole the show. His 51 points scored are still a Marriott Center record. Cougar fans stood up and gave him a standing ovation.
That makes this game special. Give a piece of basketball history a chance.
