6. Michael Loyd Jr saves BYU off the bench for NCAA win (2010)

When you go 17 years between NCAA tournament wins, it takes something special to get the over the hump.

Even for a great team with lots of talent, if you’ve haven’t tasted victory in the Big Dance before, it seems much harder to get. Tyler Haws, Jackson Emery, Jimmer Fredette, Noah Hartsock, Chris Miles, Brandon Davies, Jonathan Tavernari—this team had plenty of luminaries that could have been the difference in the game.

But it wasn’t any of them. It was backup point guard Michael Loyd Jr.

The guy Jimmer beat out for the starter position the previous year came off the bench, and attacked with speed, aggression, and confidence that put the Florida Gators on their heels. Every time he came in the game, Loyd sparked the Cougars to run, and got them back in the game.

Now, don’t get me wrong: BYU basketball owes a good chunk of this double overtime win to Jimmer and some killer, clutch threes.

But Loyd was a monster on both ends of the floor, pressuring, harassing. His last game in a Cougar uniform (he transferred to DII following the season) may have been his best.
