BYU football: With Ty Detmer out, what’s next for Cougars?

BYU finds an outside and fires most of the current staff

If an outsider is brought in, I really do believe that it is going to be someone who does not have a lot influence or power to bring other coaches with him.

However, if they do find someone who has that much influence, it is going to be a higher profile coach who could bring some of the staff that currently work with them.

Jay Hill-Jay Hill is currently the head coach for FCS Weber State. Currently the Weber State football team is ranked No. 8 in the FCS which is a good accomplishment. Whether switching Head Coach FCS level to offensive coordinator for a struggling FBS team is an upgrade is debatable. However, if he were to take the job, he would definitely be someone who could bring some members of his current staff with him.

Aaron Roderick – Roderick may not be a true “outsider,” but he’s in a unique situation. Although he is not currently “coaching” anywhere, Roderick is a BYU football consultant and was a graduate assistant coach at BYU, a running backs coach for SUU and a receivers coach/co-offensive coordinator for the University of Utah over the span of over a decade. Although he is not currently in a position to have a ton of influence to bring in new coaches, he has met a lot of different people and has coached with a lot of other coaches who may also be looking for a job.

Garrett Tujague/Robert Anae – Tujague and Anae were both coaches for BYU football with Bronco Mendenhall and are now with him at Virginia. Both would possibly be able to bring other coaches with them back to Utah. This is because many of the current staff for Virginia is from Utah and has lived in Utah their entire lives. Both of these are long shots however because they are both doing very well in Virginia. Tujague is a higher possibility however because it would be a promotion, whereas Anae would be losing a secure job, higher pay and current success.
