Xavion Staton, the best rim-protector in the 2025 recruiting class and BYU signee, is heading to Utah Prep in Hurricane, UT, to join AJ Dybantsa for his final season of high school basketball.
Transferring mid-season is certainly a surprise, as many following the future Cougar respond in tune with King George in muttering, "I wasn't aware that was something a person could do."
Perplexed, yet equally pleased, fans will now get to watch two future BYU basketball players share the floor and develop chemistry long before suiting up for Kevin Young's program. This can only be seen as a major positive with this season's rocky start in context.
Does this mean that Staton and Dybantsa will be silently influencing fellow Utah Prep product JJ Mandaquit to rescind his letter of intent with Washington to team up in Provo? No, this isn't espionage as hilarious as that would be.
Needless to say, a Utah Prep team that was already dominant has added an elite presence at the rim, and the backboards in Hurricane will never be the same. Dybantsa and Staton will get a feel for each other's tendencies before starting their collegiate careers at BYU thanks to this midseason transfer.
Utah Prep basketball should be appointment viewing for most Cougar fans whenever attendance is possible--this is going to be fun.
