While this doesn't arrive as especially shocking news, BYU football will happily celebrate the commitment of Jaxson Rex, the cousin of Preston and Isaac and carrier of a legacy name in the history of BYU football.
After narrowing down his decision to BYU and local UCLA, the California native decided to follow the path blazed by his family members and join Kalani Sitake and the BYU Cougars. The 3-star commit recently enjoyed his official visit to the program and is a mission-first commitment, meaning we won't see him suit up for another two years following his senior season in 2026.
BOOM! 🔥 JAXSON REX HAS COMMITTED TO BYU! 😎

I wrote the following about Jaxson's recruitment when he narrowed his final schools list to two.
"Jaxson's uncle, Byron Rex, was an All-American tight end during his time with BYU football, and his cousin Isaac was the starting tight end with the Cougars in 2020 and 2021. Another cousin of the same family, Preson Rex, is a current running back at BYU."
"A three-star recruit standing at 6'1", Jaxson doesn't play tight end like his relatives, but was still heavily recruited by names like Arizona, Boise State, New Mexico, and more. Now down to finalists from the Big 12 and Big Ten conferences, Rex's decision will wait until after he takes official visits to both programs."
He spoke on his recruitment and conversations with BYU's coaching staff, outlining how he believes he can impact the game on both offense and defense -- as the athlete designation would suggest, he played safety and wide receiver in high school.
"[BYU is] the offer I’ve been waiting and grinding for. My family basically bleeds blue, and I’ve grown up in Provo watching my cousins play and going to camps. So getting that call was huge for me."
"I just love football — offense, defense, all of it. I’m glad I don’t have to choose right now. I’m gonna enjoy playing both sides my senior year, and after my mission I’ll figure out the fastest way to get on the field and help the team."
The 89th-rated athlete in the 2027 class, per 247 Sports composite rankings, Rex is a massive acquisition for the program.
